We’ve had it installed for several years now, and very pleased. The only other option would have been to remove our original 1913 sash windows, and replace with brand new.

We are very proud to have installed our magnetic secondary glazing at the National Trust's Hidcote Manor Gardens, in the staff offices – to keep everyone warm in rooms where other potential secondary glazing solutions had been considered out of the question.

(announced 7th July)

Important update for October 2020: Extraglaze has given great consideration to the Green Homes Grant, and has declined to take part.
Having investigated the grant in some detail the process of joining the scheme is far beyond our capacity, particularly during the busiest time in our calendar year. It looks like it would take several months of intensive effort to achieve, and much of it dependent on others, with processes and approvals outside our control timewise. This level of uncertainty means the time in which to complete work (before March 2021) may turn out to be impractical, possibly negative.

The Green Homes Grant voucher scheme was outlined by the Chancellor to fund and help bring work to UK businesses that have suffered because of earlier lock down measures. It will help home owners insulate their homes and improve their green credentials, in a very short period until the end of March 2021.

The full details of the scheme are not yet available, but the outline does say you can fund secondary glazing when it supplements a broader project of insulation measures. A very helpful article is provided here at the Money Saving Expert website.

Vouchers are intended as a subsidy of two thirds (possibly more) of the value of an insulation project.

Extraglaze has chosen not to participate.

Please rest assured about our credentials: we are already accredited via Trading Standards, and a member of the Guild of Master Craftsmen. The testimonials on our web site do us proud. We have installations in National Trust properties. Furhtermore our work has been highly commended in the Listed Heritage magazine, published by the  Listed Properties Owner's Club for whom our product was submitted, and subsequently installed by their own technical author.

The scheme may not be to your liking if all you had in mind was insulating your windows. Your grant application will have to be based on other types of 'primary' measures with window insulation tagged on. The rules indicate that the grant contribution towards your 'secondary' measures may not be more than the contribution towards the primary measures. For example if the grant pays £400 towards insulating your roof space then it can only pay £400 towards the cost of your secondary glazing.

Extraglaze says...

“Since the announcement of the Green Homes Grant we have received many enquiries about the scheme, and we notice customers are holding back their plans while they wait for the scheme to start working for them. For anyone wishing to install secondary glazing before this winter we hope this does not backfire, if the scheme is not super slick, or demand creates bottlenecks inside the small time window. Anyone bringing forward their timescale (understandably) from winter 2021/22 and beyond into this year might lengthen the inevitable queue for an assessment and the Grant, therefore setting some people back.

“Undoubtedly the scheme's assessors will prioritise other measures over secondary glazing , in other words owners that have identified secondary glazing as their priority will be told the vouchers are better spent on other works first or instead. This might raise some disappointment and even contention.

“Will home owners benefit? Some will of course. Our worries will be for the vulnerable who could go through another winter waiting for a grant to come through.

“Will Extraglaze benefit? Having chosen to opt out we won't benefit, but this way we are freed up to press on as before, and without adding complexity & burden to the business and the costs associated.”
